1° - The hydroalcoholic solution

News, tips, suggestions and discoveries.

From today we talk about science and also about cleaning with a new columnTalking Solutions, the scientific pills created by Allegrini team along with Dr Enrico Davoli of Mario Negri Institute.

1° - The hydroalcoholic solution.

Many people ask: " What percentage of #alcohol does this product contain? Is it high?"

It is not necessary for a product to have high percentages of alcohol to have disinfectant efficacy.

It has been shown that ethanol or isopropyl alcohol is more effective at a concentration of 60% to 80%.

Water, present in the solution along with alcohol, acts as a catalyser and plays a key role in the denaturation of the proteins of the vegetative cell membranes.

Water also slows the evaporation of alcohol, thus increasing its contact time on the surface and improving its disinfectant efficacy. At concentrations above 80-85%, the effectiveness of alcohol as a disinfectant decreases.

Ethyl alcohol (ethanol), at concentrations of 60%-80%, is an excellent virucidal agent that inactivates all enveloped viruses having a lipid membrane (e.g. herpes, vaccinia and flu viruses) and many non-enveloped viruses (e.g. adenovirus, enterovirus, rhinovirus and rotavirus but not hepatitis A virus or poliovirus). It has also been demonstrated to be effective against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), rotavirus, echovirus and astrovirus. Isopropyl alcohol, based on some studies, at concentrations of 60%-80% is not as active against enteroviruses (non-enveloped) but is fully active against enveloped viruses. Studies have also shown the ability of ethyl and isopropyl alcohol to inactivate hepatitis B virus (HBV) and herpes virus. Sars-CoV2 is an enveloped virus. Both alcohols are generally used as active ingredients in disinfectants.
